Motor Vehicle Apprenticeships
All qualifications have a strong bias towards health and safety in the workplace.
A Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair
qualification involves work on cars and light commercial vehicles such
as Transit Vans. The technology inside a modern car now is so advanced
that the skills required by technicians are quite often a mixture of
mechanical, electrical and electronic engineering. Diagnostic computers
are becoming more predominant as many of the cars mechanical features
are being linked into the central computer within the car.
A Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair
qualification involves work on large commercial vehicles such as
lorries, large vans, and buses. Commercial vehicles travel larger
distances and require more routine maintenance.
Heavy Vehicles
have larger engines, larger parts and quite often have other technology
attached to them such as tachographs, tail lifts, load sensors, etc.
These features are attached because many commercial vehicles are used
for a specific purpose ie to transport freight, to be easily loaded and
unloaded at their destinations.
A Vehicle Body Repair qualification involves work
in an accident repair centre. The work involves removing panels and
parts off cars damaged in an accident. A Body Repair Technician
replaces the panels with new panels and parts, or carries out repairs
on the damaged parts and then re-attaches them to the car once they
have been repaired to manufacturer standards.
The skills gained in this career path will include welding and
specific repair techniques for different materials such as fibre glass,
alloys, metals and plastics.
A Vehicle Refinish qualification involves work in
an accident repair centre. The work will involve taking repaired
vehicles and applying paints to ensure that the damaged area matches
the undamaged areas of the car. The work involves different stages
preparation of panels before paint is applied, application of base
coats, and finish coats to a very high specification. Paint mixing is
another skill acquired through the training.
Refinish work is very precise. Attention to detail is very important to be successful in this type of work.
Education Requirements
To be successful in these career paths, GSCE passes (ideally C and
above) should have been achieved in English, Mathematics and a Science
subject. Other relevant subjects include ICT and Technology. You will
sit an aptitude test before entering the training programme.
