ATA

ATA is a voluntary assessment programme for technicians working in the retail motor industry. It has the backing of major vehicle manufacturers, independent service and repair organisations and Automotive Skills, which is the Sector Skills Council for the Retail Motor Industry.

ATA technicians sign a special Code of Conduct. They are issued with a photo identity card, included on a public register on a dedicated website and there is publicity and point-of-sale material available.

ATA is based on National Occupational Standards to ensure that it meets the skills requirements of the Retail Motor Industry. To achieve accreditation a technician must pass a series of tests of practical skill and knowledge, at one of three competency levels:

  • Service Maintenance Technician
  • Diagnostic Technician
  • Master Technician

To ensure that technicians keep abreast of innovations in technology, they are re-assessed every 5 years to maintain their accreditation.

Automotive Technician Accreditation is governed by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI), the professional association for individuals employed in the Retail Motor Industry and the leading award body for vocational qualifications in the automotive sector.

Transport Training Services Ltd has been an approved assessment centre for Light Vehicle Technicians since 2007.

ATA is also available for Vehicle Body Repair and Refinish Technicians, Air Conditioning Technicians and Vehicle Damage Assessors.
